About Connie

I love to laugh and to give giggles to others. My mom used to tape paper to the tray on my highchair and give me crayons, so I’ve been drawing since before I can actually remember! I grew up in Elizabeth, NJ and that home had the coolest built-in bookcases that were jam-packed with books! Some of my favorites from grade school are the Nancy Drew mysteries, Where the Wild Things Are, Little Women, and  Charlotte’s Web (who doesn’t love that one?)

  • I have a degree in Fine Arts from Syracuse University and spent most of my career years in advertising, in agencies from Madison Avenue in New York City; to St. Petersburg, Florida; and in New Jersey. I now prefer to "paint" with my words.

  • I also worked in the Ad Center of TIME Inc., where I met my husband.  I’ve done everything from secretary to broadcast production and ended up as Director of Account Coordination until becoming an at-home mom for my son, Tommy.

  • I served as a Committee Member for years in the New Jersey chapter of SCBWI.  I now attend events throughout Florida.

  • Selected to work with award-winning kid-lit superstar, Jerry Spinelli, during a weeklong Highlights writers workshop in Chautauqua, New York in 2006. What an honor!

  • A magazine workshop that week sparked an idea for an article for FACES magazine that turned into a monthly feature called “Dear Tommy” that ran for over seven years. I’ve also written for other children’s magazines such as Fun For Kidz, Appleseeds, and a short piece for Highlights.

  • I took TV Screenwriting classes in Alan Kingsberg’s Advanced Writer Room in New York City. I developed two pilot episodes from some of my kooky characters.

  • Loving screenwriting, I also took a Movie Writing course, taught by screenwriter, Max Adams in LA. I have completed a screenplay, PIRATE PRINCIPAL, for an animated feature based on the characters in PRINCIPAL KIDD.

  • I am now focusing on chapter books and early middle-grade stories. To learn more, I’ve studied through Children’s Book Academy, and took Visual Storytelling, plus Character & Costume Design with OC Art Studios. I am currently pitching a manuscript with the working title of BUGS ON BROADWAY.

  • I live in Florida now – but will always consider myself a Jersey Girl.

  • On the side, I give private art lessons to children.

  • I'm a new blogger. Please check out my LIFETIME LEARNER blog.

  • I work hard daily battling the symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease. So far, I’m winning! I hope to be an inspiration to others who live with challenges of all kinds.

By the way — my maiden name is Travisano – and my married name, Colon -rhymes with alone. (Remember, you’re never alone when you’re with a book!)

Happy Reading and be well!

Vision

My mission is to create a happy reading experience with humor in my books so children will choose to read voluntarily, which also pleases parents and teachers.
